Who: Lin Danto
What: Amazing architectural designs for the every day woman!
Why We Love Her: Her sense of style and exquisite attention to detail make her a must in our list of Designers to Watch! She know what woman want and what woman need and creates timeless pieces that can be worn for ages to come. We recently sat down with her to get a little more insight into why she does what she does and we had a blast! She is fun, hip and trendy but yet so classic and well put together. Here's what she had to say to us!
SM: How did you know that your calling was to be a designer?
LD : When I was younger I remember thinking to myself that I should design my own clothes and etc. because I always had such a clear picture of what I was looking for when I went shopping. Never being able to find exactly what I wanted, I would buy the closest thing to it, and then alter it..change little things. I was always cutting up my clothes! I remember falling in love with fashion when I was a freshman in high school. I was obsessed with these Prada velvet wedges that were out in the mid 90’s. My grandma bought them for me for my 15th birthday and I was in love with them... I think I wore them to school everyday for that entire year! Too funny!
SM: What is your main source of inspiration?
I’m really into architecture and sculpture... i think a lot of the detailing on my bags has a structural influence. As far as the colorways, I think my choices are influenced by the 1970’s... the rich earthy colors popular at that time. The laid ‐back slouchy look of that era paired with sculptural detailing makes for a really cool and unique look :)
SM: When and where was your company founded?
LD: Scottsdale, AZ. I am based here, but manufacture in NYC, and buy all of my materials in NYC, so my time is split between the two cities. I started working on the line about 2 and a half years ago, and launched it in the beginning of May ‘11.
SM: What was the first design you ever created?
LD: The Calypso
SM: How do you name the pieces within your collection?
LD: Honestly, whatever are the first things that pop into my head from looking at each design! I know that’s not the most exciting thing, but that’s how I do it. Everyone wants bags named after them, so I see myself doing a little bit of that with the Spring collection :)
SM: Which item do you find yourself wearing most for the season?
LD: The Calypso is such a comfortable bag. The wide shoulder strap distributes the weight of the bag across the shoulder, so it’s a great bag for people who carry a ton of stuff around with them. You have to take the packing paper out, and fill it with regular purse stuff to see how it looks on. It has the perfect “slouch” and almost conforms to the body! I also love the Capital tote for day, and the Cameo for evening.
SM: How would you describe your everyday style?
LD: I dress pretty classic. Nice jeans with a V neck tee... and a scarf and leather jacket if it’s cold. I am an accessories freak (obvi) so I believe in dressing relatively simple as the accessories make the outfit!
SM: What was the biggest challenge in starting your collection?
LD: Living in AZ, so far away from NYC where my factory is has been very difficult. I’m a perfectionist, so I like to be there making sure everything goes exactly how I want it to go. I can’t be there all the time, which is frustrating, but I’m learning to accept that.
SM: Do you have a favorite celebrity? If so, why?
LD: I love Victoria Beckham’s style... if I could have anyone’s wardrobe it would be hers! SJP is great also. Of the younger more popular celebrities I’d have to say the Kardashians. Kourtney always dresses well. It seems like the younger girls look up to Rihanna and Blake Lively as style icons which I think is great.
SM: Where do you see the brand in 5 years?
LD: I’d like to have the line in Department stores, and in boutiques overseas. I just started selling a few months ago, so I’m just starting out.
SM: What fad would you never want to see come back around?
LD: Personally, I’m not a fan of the excessive studding!
SM: What is your plan of attack for the upcoming collection?
LD: I am adding some great new leathers, and lots of new styles for Resort and Spring.
